This volume gathers the major scholars of the history of art of Rome, in time order from antiquity to the contemporary age. The authors have had the chance of using and commenting images that sometimes were new also for them. Photography from helicopter allows a bird’s-eye view that reminds us of the landscape painting in the XVII and XVIII century. In this way specific buildings, monumental complexes or relations between constructions can be observed with a new plasticity, which often allows a more synthetic view of the works and a topographic knowledge. The antique Rome and the one of the XVII and XVIII cent., full of theatricality, are both characterised by a strong presence: on one hand there are the forums, the Pantheon, the Colosseum and the walls and on the other the squares and the works by Bernini and Borromini.  Other features that consent a fascinating interpretation are the Basilicas and the Early-Christian churches or Renaissance masterpieces such as the Capitoline Hill and the famous gardens and villas, which could never be perceived with a quick glance from below. The Middle Ages themselves will bring unexpected features but also contemporaneity, i.e. Rome’s EUR seems to be coming out directly from a metaphysical painting. This volume is a very interesting aiding tool for history of art, and at the same time is a pleasurable work. Thus, the scholars will find it innovating and intriguing, while the lovers will discover in it an unprecedented series of Rome’s views. All the texts are written by international scholars, and each one of them is a synthesis where the various authors give innovative interpretations.
