Review

Written by jacabook

Great artists between the two World Wars begin to tackle with biblical scenes. After the Second World War, the dominican monks debate on the “Art sacrè” review with the most important painters in order to make them undertake with holy art; the major works have to be rebuilded and furnished. The Dominican monks are looking for the most excellent artists, not for devotional craftsmen. The encounter with Le Corbusier is shattering. The sanctuary of Notre dame du Haut has to be rebuilded. Le Corbusier is involved in an elaborate commitment by The Diocesan Commission for Sacred Art of Besançon, thanks to the enthusiastic interest of canon Ledeur and François Matey. Starting from a tightened debate between the customers and the architect (this topic will never be underlined) Ronchamp will be created, and it will be immediately considered a masterpiece, but immediately it will also fuel many arguments. Nowadays, more than ever, the controversy is polarized between different point of wiew between architecture and holy art. Debates had been also revitalized because of new Renzo Piano’s building for the monastery which has been builded not far from the sanctuary to allow to someone to took care of it. Razionalism and expressionism, sacred and secular are the topics of debate which concerns the gap betwen art field and liturgical field. Troughout a deep gaze of religion antrophology, the Ronchamp’s architecture can be read with a critic and aware interpretation, and we can deal with the difficulty of a work from which we absolutely can’t apart from. A focused photography campaign allows to read both the majestic and the simbolic meaning of Le Corbusier’s work, as well as the architectonic and also ornamental details, which belongs to this monument, as result of an extraordinary dialogue.
