Unlike Central and South America, in North America we have few monumental testimonies from the pre-Columbian world. This does not detract from the important cultural resistance of the few Native Americans who survived the genocide. The volume deals with the various cultural areas of the Native American tribes, including the great plains, the South-West with the remains of villages built under gigantic rocks and pueblos on the mesas, the current cultural vivacity of Opi and Tao, bearers of democratic traditions compared to the hierarchical societies of Central America (Aztecs, Maya) and the Inca of the Andes. Great vitality and cultural rebirth is expressed by the people of the west coast of Canada, almost exterminated by infectious diseases brought by Europeans at the beginning of the twentieth century. The potlatch civilization has not only museums but new ateliers and art centers. The same is true for the lords of the great North, the Inuit: art galleries showcase their votive statuettes, print and online magazines publish this ancient and refined art with a growing market. The ecological movement also cooperates in the cultural resistance of the Natives of North America.
