In the encyclical of Pope Francis, Laudato si’, the name of Romano Guardini recurs more than once, highlighting the continuing relevance of the Italo-German theologian. Pope Benedict XVI had already recognized him as one of his masters, so much so that during his farewell greetings he mentioned the famous statement that, in the turmoil of history, made Guardini one of the most countercurrent and innovative voices of the twentieth century: "An extraordinary process has begun: the awakening of the Church in souls". A cornerstone of his thought find a strong resonance in Luigi Giussani, a priest who marked the history of the Italian church in the 50s. Giussani was among those who grasped the novelty of Guardini and of his writings. He immediately shared Guardini's approach to man and history, re-reading and re-proposing with personal and innovative accents some of the theologian’s issues, such as the conception of the reality of the Church, of the meaning of morality and culture, up to a fundamental recovery of the sense of power and human action. The encounter and interaction with the work of Guardini offered Giussani the opportunity to scrutinize and emphasize the original quality of some of his key-categories: esperience and thought.
