Member of the German Archaeological Institute, of the Pontifical Academy of Roman Archeology and of the Commission of Sacred Archeology, he is a specialist in late ancient and early Christian archeology. Since 1983 he has been teaching at the Westfälische Wilhelms Universität in Münster, Germany.
